CRISAL POWERS-UP INNOVATIVE OXY-HYBRID FURNACE

In the year CRISAL celebrates eight decades of innovation and excellence in the glass industry, it also marks the first production run from its oxyhybrid furnace. This investment is part of a strategy strongly focused on decarbonization, supported by Anders Invest and Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

Today, December 4th, 2024, we celebrate the start-up of a next generation oxyhybrid glass melting furnace, featuring an electrification level of up to 80%. Natural gas consumption will gradually be replaced by renewable gases, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels. With a melting capacity of 90 tons per day, this furnace represents a technological milestone within Working Package 2 of the ECP Mobilizing Agenda – Ecoceramics and Glassware of Portugal, dedicated to decarbonization and circularity in the sector. It stands as a decisive step toward a sustainable future for glass production in Portugal.

The project began in August 2024 with the demolition of the regenerative furnace, paving the way for the oxy-hybrid furnace (oxygen combustion). In just 100 days, the team completed drainage, demolition, construction, heating, filling, and final works in December. Today marks the production of the first product from the oxyhybrid furnace, signaling the start of a more sustainable manufacturing process.

This is a pioneering project in Europe, serving as an experimental platform to test different energy combinations, electrification levels, and combustion with renewable gases, including green hydrogen and biomethane, in an industrial environment. The goal is to validate the oxy-hybrid model and assess its replicability across other glass industries.

CRISAL thus takes a leading role in driving decarbonization in the industry, both in Portugal and across Europe.

A significant milestone for CRISAL and the LCGlass Group!

CRISAL & SUMOL: A FULL-GLASS PARTNERSHIP, 100% PORTUGUESE

In the year Sumol celebrates 70 years and CRISAL marks 80, flavor, design, and glassmaking savoir-faire come together to create an authentic glass, ready to toast.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, Sumol challenged designer Alexandra Moura, already a partner in a previous fashion collection, for a new collaboration: the creation of a unique, commemorative glass.

Renowned for her innovative projects, Alexandra Moura unveiled Sumol’s official new glass, designed by her and produced by CRISAL.
“The defining feature of this glass is its sensory dimension. (…) Bringing texture, bringing those elements that, for me, are iconic.” (…) “It was conceived, designed, and produced entirely in Portugal.”

Alexandra Moura

This challenge was embraced by CRISAL with special attention, not only because both brands celebrate long-standing histories in the Portuguese landscape, but also due to the ambitious design that pushed CRISAL to look to the future while honoring the past:

“To reproduce Alexandra Moura’s design as faithfully as possible, we had to diversify our current production techniques, exploring innovative technology that allowed us to respect the original concept of the piece.”

Artur Queiroz (CRISAL)

This glass is the continuation of a partnership that celebrates creativity, tradition, and innovaiton. When brande with such rich stories come togetherm unique pieces emerge, objects that mark moments in time.

CRISAL: WRITING THE HISTORY OF GLASS FOR EIGHT DECADES

At CRISAL, glass is more than just a material; it is memory, identity, and innovation.
We are the only national producer of glassware in Portugal, operating through automated processes.

We have transformed everyday pieces into true symbols of Portuguese popular culture. From the iconic Galão glass, an essential in any café or pastry shop, named after this uniquely Portuguese hot drink, to the anchor goblet associated with Madeira’s poncha, or the tulip glass used in traditional taverns to serve wine by the glass. Even the classic beer glasses, Príncipe and Barrilito, have become connected with fino or imperial, shaping the image of the brewing industry over the past decades.

Therefore, on May 31, CRISAL celebrated its 80th anniversary and 2 years as an integral part of the LCGlass Group. And what better way to mark this occasion than by bringing all our employees together for a celebration? This special moment also welcomed local and national entities who joined us to honor our history and reinforce CRISAL’s meaning in the glass industry and within the local community.

Today, we keep alive the spirit that brought us here, with pride in our tradition and confidence in the future. We are proud of the path we’ve taken and excited about the journey ahead.
